In addition to fabulous amenities, Airport authorities have done an amazing job helping passengers be prepared, stay informed and remain safe while flying during these unprecedented times.
This article guides you through the Detroit Metro Airport from airport maps to the best food by terminal, in particular, navigating travel in these unprecedented times.
An Interesting History!
Not only does DTW rank among the top 20 busiest airports in the US, it is one of many United States airports with an interesting history!
On September 4, 1930, the Wayne County Airport opened at the corner of Middlebelt Road and Wick Road in Romulus, Michigan and in due course, was reinvented to keep up with new laws and advancements.
Fast forward to 2020, now situated on 4,850 acres, this metro airport served a staggering 18.1 million passengers by year end, 2019.
Maps, Maps, & More Maps!
Passengers flying on any one of the 64 airlines supported by DTW can be best prepared to get around with the right information. To this end, DTW has done a wonderful job providing a host of maps to explore based on ones needs.
In 2009, DTW became the US hub for Delta Air Lines following their merge with Northwest Airlines. While members of the Delta’s SkyMiles Program (or the SkyTeam Alliance) are no stranger to DTW, getting from Point A to Point B may feel a bit overwhelming!
To get the overall lay of the land, it may be helpful to begin with a big picture overview. This being said, DTW’s Airport Campus Map does just the trick!
Additionally, for those who wish to explore by terminal, comprehensive maps are available for both McNamara Terminal and North Terminal. These interactive terminal maps show gate information and allow you to zoom in to locate airline lounges, dining options, restrooms, services and amenities, shopping options and TSA Securing Checkpoints. WOW!
In the event that you are coming in on an international flight via Air France or Lufthansa, you may be keen to know which terminal you will be landing at. Thus, searching by airline is an option too!
Have these fine folks thought of everything, or what?
Passengers transferring between terminals may utilize Terminal to Terminal/Westin Shuttle which connects McNamara and North Terminal. To this end, shuttles depart approximately every 10 minutes from the Ground Transportation Centers and Westin Hotel entrance.
Food For Thought!
Eating out is often a real treat for travelers and DTW’s award-winning concession program certainly delivers! With selections ranging from Metro Detroit favorites, familiar national franchises, and relaxing sit-down restaurants, the skies the limit!
This being said, like many airports, DTW’s culinary scene has been impacted by COVID restrictions. As a result, visitors should be aware that some restaurants are operating under limited hours or closed all together.
Ergo, staying informed is a piece of cake with ongoing updates found on DTW’s Know Before You Go page. Upon review, as of October 2020, the following food and beverage concessions are open.
Regardless of your eating out preferences, there is no harm staying on the safe side! To this end, why not pre-pack your own healthy snacks to stay fueled between stops and in-flight where options may be limited.
Cheers To Your Health & Safety
.
Most US airports, if not all, are required to take special precautions due to COVID and naturally DTW is doing their part. Accordingly, a March press release by Wayne County Airport Authority highlights many of the changes implemented and the DTW COVID Information Page provides answers to questions passengers may have.
In addition to COVID information and Travel Alerts provided by DTW, passengers may take additional precautions. For this reason, checking with airlines directly for rules and regulations, as well as visiting the TSA and CDC sites which provide updates on travel safety measures.
If Parking Is In Your Plans At DTW
Is parking at DTW in your plans? If so, then check out the various parking options and stay informed with Know Before You Go updates. Reviewing both may just help save precious time and mitigate stress associated getting to and from the airport.
Planning ones timing is another consideration prior to heading to the airport. With this in mind, checking traffic conditions on Mi Drive and using accurate driving directions to the rescue!
I hate to admit this, but I have forgotten where I have parked at the airport. And on multiple occasions! In a rush to catch my flight, I have subsequently neglected to jot the location down.
Well, DTW definitely has this covered as framed QR codes, posted at elevator banks, contain location information specifically intended to remind you where you’re parked. Simply utilize the barcode scanner app on your mobile device and you are on your way!
Rental Car, Rideshare & Other Ground Transportation Options
DTW provides access to most major rental car agencies which offer a wide selection of vehicles and comparative to other international airports, the rental car center at DTW is a separate campus accessed via courtesy shuttle. As a result, follow signs to Ground Transportation and give yourself an extra 15 to 30 minutes.
